OB Design
Different, unusual, not ordinary, whimsical. These are a few of the words others have used to describe my work. Whether it be a flying fish sculpture, functional only as a visual means of escape from the ordinary or a fully functional hand made canopy bed, the attention to detail and emphasis on craftsmanship remain paramount. I believe that each object should highlight the inherent beauty of the materials being used. I work with suppliers like California Hardwoods, an independent sawmill located in the northern part of the state, who provide some of the most beautiful and unusual local hardwoods available. We also work with the craftsmen of Ol` Fashioned Lumber in San Diego, whose work speaks for itself. (check out their site).
My name is James Whitehead. I am the owner, maker, and designer. I have been educated as a painter and sculptor, trained as an engineer and cabinetmaker. I taught visual and electronic arts internationally, providing the opportunity to travel most of the world. As an art teacher, I have been able to explore the visual interpretations of children from around the world and reinterpret in my own work. ( I know it sounds like stealing from children but my attorney says he is pretty sure that I am probably in the clear.)
I hope you enjoy the photos. The flying fish series can be viewed at Ol' Fashioned Lumber at 1815 Main St, San Diego, CA 92113. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me. If you are a former student, please contact my attorney.
